What is CoolSculpting?

The technical term is cryolipolysis, which means “fat freezing.” It is a noninvasive way of eliminating stubborn fat. It does not require surgery, anesthesia, or injections, and the patient can go home same-day. CoolSculpting is a machine with a wand or panels that are placed on the surface of the skin.

What is stubborn fat?

Stubborn fat are fat cells that are difficult to reduce or eliminate with traditional methods, such as diet and exercise. They have built up over the years – and just won’t go away! The number of these fat cells are typically set during adolescence and vary person-to-person. Stubborn fat rarely develops in adulthood. Stubborn fat bulges can appear in various places on the body. The most common are under the chin, under the jawline, thighs, abdomen, along the bra line, back, upper arm, or underneath the buttocks.

Are the results immediate?

CoolSculptingⓇ freezes fat cells, which kills them. Because the procedure does not remove the fat cells, the patient would then need to wait for the body to naturally eliminate and expel the dead fat cells. The dead fat is broken down and flushed out of the body through the liver, which typically takes 1-3 months. The end result is a 20%-25% reduction in visible fat. Because stubborn fat cells are set during childhood, these results are usually permanent.

Is it right for me?

CoolSculptingⓇ is FDA approved for removing stubborn fat. The type of individual who benefits most from the procedure is someone who is healthy and already practices diet and exercise. CoolSculptingⓇ is not a weight-loss treatment, nor should it be the first-line of defense against all fat. CoolSculptingⓇ is intended for trouble areas of visible fat that cannot be removed with diet and exercise.

Is it safe?

Yes. CoolSculptingⓇ is a safe and effective way of reducing trouble body fat in most people. It has been tested in multiple studies and hundreds of thousands of people have undergone treatment. CoolSculptingⓇ has been used in the United States since 2011 and is FDA approved for 9 body fat area. It is also approved by Health Canada and the European Union. Those that are not recommended to have the procedure are individuals who suffer from cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria.

Is CoolSculptingⓇ painful?

The treatment uses cooling panels that are placed on a roll of fat. Though not necessarily painful, it can create a sensation of tugging or pulling. Because the procedure uses extremely cold temperatures, it can cause mild to moderate discomfort in some people. Common side effects are temporary redness, swelling, bruising, and skin sensitivity. These side effects typically go away on their own within 3-11 days.

How long is the procedure?

One CoolSculptingⓇ procedure usually takes 1-2 hours. It can take longer if multiple areas of the body are being targeted, though this is usually broken up into multiple sessions.
